The Washington Knights are a D.C.-based franchise, with the given team nickname influenced by the military professionalism and chivalric acts of the medieval knight. Knights of the middle ages had a societal code of conduct instilled at a young age that expected them to fight bravely at war, exhibit loyalty to one’s lord and heraldry at battle, and be noble in the public eye, traits that deem the “Knights” a fitting nickname for a team representing our nation’s capitol.
One of the most notable heraldic traditions of the knightly class was flying colored banners brandished with the nation’s coat of arms during combat to exhibit power and loyalty. In the same sense, knights would wield a heraldic colored shield with the nation’s coat of arms during these events.
The Washington Knights wear a royal blue paired with black and an accenting blue-tinted silver, influenced by the characteristics of armor. The Knights sport a coat of arms shield (attached) on each shoulder, donning the stars and stripes of the D.C. flag.
